While researching the history of unicorns, I came to think of them as the idealized fulfillment of various roles assigned by humans to other species, in the context of a number of cultures and time periods. Without a body, the unicorn offered an unresisting ground to desires, beliefs, and agendas projected onto it, which took on extreme forms.
